Democracy in Liberated South Lebanon
It is impossible for anyone traveling
through the liberated areas of South Lebanon not to be
overwhelmed by strong emotions. Clearly, “the Lebanese
government in the South is Hizbullah and Hizbullah is the
government in the South.” Nobody who has been there can deny
this. Hizbullah isn’t just a group of gun toting angry youth –
they are a sophisticated political and social welfare movement.
(The recently-held graduation ceremony for 180 Hizbullah-trained
reporters and photographers in Nabatieh, an impressive
multi-lingual Website and Al-Manar television station are all
testaments to modern media savvy!)

| Lahoud
denies military regime waits in wings
President Emile Lahoud assured the
opposition on Tuesday that he was not contemplating setting up a
military government, insisting such a system would not work in
Lebanon. It was the first time that Lahoud had directly
addressed an issue that has been at the center of opposition to
his rule. “I never thought about forming a military government,”
Lahoud told a delegation from the Journalists’ Union, headed by
its president, Melhem Karam. “Everyone knows what happened to
the military governments that were formed here in the past. The
country was divided and was on the verge of burning down as a
result.” He said the country’s national interest was too
important to allow political bickering within the executive
branch. “There is an enemy waiting...
