It is impossible for anyone traveling through the liberated areas of South Lebanon not to be overwhelmed by strong emotions. Clearly, “the Lebanese government in the South is Hizbullah and Hizbullah is the government in the South.” Nobody who has been there can deny this. Hizbullah isn’t just a group of gun toting angry youth – they are a sophisticated political and social welfare movement. (The recently-held graduation ceremony for 180 Hizbullah-trained reporters and photographers in Nabatieh, an impressive multi-lingual Website and Al-Manar television station are all testaments to modern media savvy!)

As-Safir newspaper reports on a proposal by Lebanese Minister for Economic Affairs Bassil Flihan to set up an artificial fibre manufacturing centre in Akar Industrial Estate. The newspaper notes that in the middle of January 2001 the minister met at his office with a delegation from the Textile Workers' Union to discuss the matter

Lebanon Invest has officially replaced the Canadian investor in Lebanon’s mail service, Post and Telecommunications Minister Jean-Louis Qordahi announced on Tuesday. “The old investor left the Lebanese market amicably,” Qordahi said at a press conference, “and the new investor entered by injecting new capital into this sector, on the best terms and with a clear mechanism for continuing work in the future.”

President Emile Lahoud assured the opposition on Tuesday that he was not contemplating setting up a military government, insisting such a system would not work in Lebanon. It was the first time that Lahoud had directly addressed an issue that has been at the center of opposition to his rule. “I never thought about forming a military government,” Lahoud told a delegation from the Journalists’ Union, headed by its president, Melhem Karam. “Everyone knows what happened to the military governments that were formed here in the past.
